Night of the Museums will be held in Tampere on Saturday, May 16

27.4.2026 Night of the Museums event is taking over Tampere once again, offering plenty to see and experience on Saturday, May 16, 2026. With an event wristband, you can visit 25 venues, see over 100 program items, watch spectacular performances, and participate in workshops. The program runs from 6 p.m. until midnight, and you can travel between venues on Night of the Museums buses.

Germund Paaer’s painting returned to Hyhky school after conservation

15.4.2026 A landscape painting by visual artist Germund Paaer (1881–1950) has been returned to Hyhky school following extensive conservation work. The large-scale painting, originally commissioned as a stage backdrop, belongs to the City of Tampere’s collection and was completed in the early 20th century. Paaer is known as the first chief designer of Kalevala jewelry, as well as a graphic artist and an enthusiast of ethnography.

Veikko Haukkavaara’s fish sculpture to be removed from Koukkuniemi

24.3.2026 A public sculpture belonging to the collections of the Tampere Art Museum, Siimankatkoja (1973) by Veikko Haukkavaara, will be removed from its current location on Wednesday, 25 March 2026, due to construction work related to the new local detailed plan for the Koukkuniemi and Rauhaniemi area. The artwork depicting a fish has been located near the shore of Lake Näsijärvi, in the yard area of the Koukkuniemi nursing home.

A major contemporary art biennial in Tampere this summer – artists for Art Realm ’26 announced

9.3.2026 Art Realm is a joint initiative of three regional art museums that organizes a contemporary art biennial rotating between different cities. The next biennial, organized by Tampere Art Museum, will open on 13 June 2026. Through an open call, 39 works by nearly 80 artists were selected. The theme of the biennial, TOGETHER, extends from the content and visual language of the artworks to working methods and collaboration with partners.

Encore! – Classics and contemporary art from the collections opens at the Tampere Art Museum 7 February 2026

6.2.2026 The collection exhibition Encore! offers audiences a unique opportunity to experience works by significant classical artists alongside compelling contemporary art. Spanning all three floors of the museum, the exhibition presents works from the collections of the Tampere Art Museum and the City of Tampere by nearly 90 artists, ranging from the 1810s to the 2020s. On display are paintings, sculptures, prints, photography, and media art.

Young Artist of the Year 2026 is Roope Itälinna

23.1.2026 Visual artist Roope Itälinna has been selected as the Young Artist of the Year 2026. He will receive a €25,000 grant awarded by the City of Tampere, as well as the opportunity to present a solo exhibition at the Tampere Art Museum’s exhibition space in the Finlayson area in autumn 2026. Itälinna is the 42nd artist to receive the Young Artist of the Year award.

Light Gallery 2025: Tove Jansson’s First Moomin Story as Light Art

22.10.2025 In honor of the Moomin 80th anniversary, Tampere Art Museum’s collection artist Tove Jansson has been chosen as the Light Gallery artist of 2025. The light art installation, projected onto the facades of central Tampere buildings, is titled The Moomins’ Journey Home. The illustrations have been selected from Jansson’s very first Moomin story. Light Gallery is part of the Tampere Festival of Light, opening 24 October 2025.

Tampere Festival of Light illuminates the city – Opening ceremony in Koskipuisto Park on 24 October

13.10.2025 Tampere Festival of Light is back to brighten up the darkest time of the year with a variety of illuminations and events. The traditional opening ceremony will be held in Koskipuisto Park on Friday, 24 October at 7 pm, and admission to the event is free. This year, the festival will celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Moomins with Moomin-themed lighting displays and the Light Gallery exhibition titled The Moomins’ Journey Home.

Lotta Svärd monument unveiled in Tampere Cathedral Park

7.10.2025 A Lotta Svärd monument has been completed in Tampere as a tribute to the work and legacy of the Lotta women. The artwork called “Läpi harmaan kiven” by sculptor Anne Koskinen is located in the northern part of Tampere Cathedral Park. The monument will become part of the Tampere City Art Collection, administered by the Tampere Art Museum.

The exhibitions of the Young Artist of the Year Man Yau and media artist Hanna Haaslahti are opening at the Tampere Art Museum

25.9.2025 On Saturday 27.9.2025, the Tampere Art Museum will open two exhibitions. The exhibition of the Young Artist of the Year 2025 Man Yau, will present works ranging from early prototypes to the most recent ensembles, including the Peep show series, which will be shown for the first time. Downstairs, a new immersive installation by media artist Hanna Haaslahti, Ancestors, will turn museum visitors into virtual doppelgangers and ancestors of a family.
