Information about accessibility

  • Public transport

Tampere Art Museum is well placed for good public transport connections beside Pyynikintori Square. The nearest public transport stops are the Pyynikintori bus and tram stops, which lie 100-150 metres away from the museum. The tram stops are located in the middle of Pirkankatu carriageway. There is traffic-light controlled access across a pedestrian crossing to the stops. Tram no 1 halts here. The bus stops are located on the north and south sides of Pirkankatu. Stops D and E lie in the immediate vicinity of the tram stops. Stop C is for buses to the adjacent municipalities of Nokia and Ylöjärvi. The Pyynikintori terminus stop is on the square itself. Tampere Art Museum lies to the north of the stops.

See the lines and timetables of the stops in the Nysse local transport route guide at https://reittiopas.tampere.fi/?locale=en

    Parking, drop-off and pick-up

Unfortunately, the museum does not have its own carpark. The closest accessible parking spaces are along Puutarhakatu near the entrance to Pyynikki Swimming Pool. They are located at a distance of about 100-150 metres from the museum. Drop-off and pick-up is permitted in front of the museum on Puutarhakatu. For those coming with their own car, the closest parking spaces are along Puutarhakatu and Mariankatu.
For further information about parking, see https://www.tampere.fi/en/transport-streets-and-maintenance/parking/parking-spaces

    The courtyard

The courtyard is slightly sloping and uneven and brick-paved. The path to the front door of the museum is uphill.

    Entrances

Accessible entrance is available at the main door. The door is about 71 cm wide. The button to open the electric door is on the left. Ring the doorbell if the entrance is too narrow, and the staff will open an adjacent double door to afford wider access. There is a ramp for access left of the steps to the main door. You can get to Tampere Art Museum most conveniently from Puutarhakatu. Makasiininkatu, the street behind the museum, is uneven and cobbled.

  • The lobby

The ticket office and information desk are located front-left of the entrance. A cloakroom with coatracks and lockers lies front-right of the entrance. The cloakroom facilities are self-service and unguarded. Beside the lockers there is an electronic plan showing all the areas in the museum that are open to visitors. The exhibition spaces, lift location and WC and childcare facilities on each floor are indicated on it.

    Passageways

All spaces in the museum are accessible with a wheelchair. The passageways are stepless.

    Lifts

The different areas in the museum can be accessed by a lift. The lift to the other floors of the museum lies on the front left after the main entrance. The door of the lift does not open automatically, but you can ask the staff to assist you in opening it. The museum has three floors. The main entrance is on the ground floor. You can find the exact location of the lift on the electronic plan in the lobby. The door of the lift is 90 cm wide. Inside the lift the floor numbers and buttons are also indicated in braille.

    Stairways

The lowest steps of the stairway leading to the upper floor are wider than those above them, and there is no wall or handrail beside them. The stairway from the ground floor to the basement has an intervening landing. There are handrails on both sides of the stairs and on the landing.

  • Shop

The shop of Tampere Art Museum is located together with the ticket office in the lobby front-left after the main entrance. The shop is open during the opening hours of the museum.

    Exhibition spaces

Some of the exhibition spaces have variable lighting. Occasionally exhibits in some of the exhibition spaces may be placed at a hight where they are not visible from a wheelchair.

    Coatracks and lockers

The coat racks and lockers are located front-right after the main entrance, beside the stairway to the upper floor. The cloakroom facilities are self-service and unguarded. Use of the lockers is free-of-charge. Backpacks are not allowed in the exhibition areas. Please leave umbrellas, wet overcoats, bottles of drinks and food packages in a locker or on a coat rack. In this way we can together protect the art works. The consumption of beverages is permitted in the lobby beside the cloakroom. You can deposit large bags that will not fit into the lockers at the cash desk. The museum has limited space for storing backpacks and bags. Tampere Art Museum is not liable for property left on the free, unguarded coat racks or in the lockers.

    Companion service

Would you like some company when you visit the museum? Does visiting it alone feel challenging? The culture companion volunteers of the City of Tampere will be happy to accompany you on your visit. The culture companion will admire the works with you and you can share your ideas about the exhibition with them. A companion can be ordered by an adult resident of Tampere. In order to avail yourself of this service, you must be able to function and move independently or with the assistance of a personal helper. Admission to the museum with a companion is free.

  • Possible dimensional obstacles to the use of pushchairs

All the exhibition areas in Tampere Art Museum are accessible with a pushchair. The passageways are stepless. If desired, pushchairs can be left in the lobby of the museum. Tampere Art Museum is not liable for property left in the lobby.

    Childcare facility

There is a childcare facility in connection with a spacious WC in the basement. If you come with the lift, exit to the right and then turn left. The facility has a changing table and a water basin.

    Baby feeding

A baby may feel hungry in the middle of a visit to the museum, but you can feed it in the exhibition areas as well. For example, the long benches on the upper floor are convenient places for feeding a baby.

  • Location and number

Unfortunately, Tampere Art Museum does not have an accessible WC that conforms to present-day standards. There is one more spacious unisex WC with an emergency call button in the basement. The exact location of this WC is indicated on the electronic plan in the lobby. The WC facilities are indicated in braille on signs beside the doors.

    Size

The width of the door of the larger WC is 90 cm. There is a horizontal handle inside to lock the door. There is an area that is free of fixtures measuring approx. 110 cm in diameter to move in. The toilet seat is located close to the wall. When seated on the toilet, there is free space measuring about 45 cm to the left and there is also free space to the right. There are lowerable hand rests on either side of the toilet seat. Tampere Art Museum provides facilities for Toilet Pass holders. If you need help, ask the staff for further information and inform them about your service needs. The other WC facilities are separate toilets for men and women.
