Encore! brings us the beloved classics and pearls of contemporary art

The collection exhibition Encore! offers audiences a unique opportunity to experience works by significant classical artists alongside compelling contemporary art.

Spanning all three floors of the museum, the extensive exhibition presents works from the collections of the Tampere Art Museum and the City of Tampere by nearly 90 artists, ranging from the 1810s to the 2020s. On display are paintings, sculptures, prints, photography, and media art. For the first time, a substantial selection of works from Tampere City Hall is also publicly accessible. The exhibition moves from the moonlit landscapes of the early Golden Age by Hjalmar Munsterhjelm to recent acquisitions in contemporary art, including Kim Simonsson’s moss girl.

The exhibition narrative is built around central themes in Finnish art. The upper floors focus on popular subjects of the 19th and 20th centuries—such as landscapes, rural life, depictions of the people, Kalevala interpretations, portraits, still lifes, and urban scenes—presented in dialogue with contemporary works. The ground floor highlights contemporary art that explores human relationships, encounters, and solitude.

The exhibition is crowned by Schjerfbeck X Nordea Art Foundation Finland, which includes five paintings of Helene Schjerfbeck.

Young Artist of the Year 2026 is Roope Itälinna

Visual artist Roope Itälinna has been selected as the Young Artist of the Year 2026. He will receive a €25,000 grant awarded by the City of Tampere, as well as the opportunity to present a solo exhibition at the Tampere Art Museum’s exhibition space in the Finlayson area in autumn 2026. Itälinna is the 42nd artist to receive the Young Artist of the Year award.

A Year of Change at the Art Museum

The spring exhibition Encore! will be the Tampere Art Museum’s last exhibition in the historic granary building on the edge of Pyynikintori this year. The museum will close on 14 June 2026 for approximately four years, as the granary building undergoes extensive renovation and a new main building is constructed alongside it.

During the summer, the Tampere Art Museum will present the Art Realm ’26 Biennial in temporary exhibition venues in the Finlayson area and at the Haihara Art Centre. The Young Artist of the Year will also continue to be selected annually.

The new Tampere Art Museum is scheduled to open to the public in 2030.

The light art installation, projected onto the facades of central Tampere buildings, is titled The Moomins’ Journey Home. Curated by Tampere Art Museum, then Light Gallery is part of the Tampere Festival of Light. Have a nice walk in the evening and enjoy the Moomin artwork!
